What is an SSL certificate? SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a global security standard that enables end-to-end encrypted data transfer. It is used by millions of businesses and individuals online to reduce the risk of theft and manipulation of sensitive information (such as credit card numbers, usernames, passwords, emails, etc.) by hackers and identity thieves. Essentially, the SSL layer allows two parties to have a private “conversation.” To establish this secure connection, an SSL certificate (also called a “digital certificate”) is installed on a web server. This certificate performs two functions:

• Authenticating the website’s identity, assuring visitors that they are not on a fake site.

• Encrypting the transmitted information.
